I=E2=80=99m still counting harvesters every few days along the Lower Mystic=
Lake in Medford and getting numbers from 4 or 5 up to a high of 14 recentl=
y on Sept. 12th.=20

I did have one very surprising sighting on Sept. 5th. I was looking at a ha=
rvester perched on a leaf at just about eye level (as they often do) when w=
hat looked like a bee flew down and chased the butterfly away. The two of t=
hem chased each other briefly, and then the butterfly settled back on the s=
ame leaf. In just a couple seconds the =E2=80=9Cbee=E2=80=9D swooped down f=
rom above, grabbed the butterfly, and carried it to a slightly higher branc=
h. I couldn=E2=80=99t see very well, but I did see wings being pulled off a=
nd dropped. I wanted to scream Nooooo!

I told my friend Marj about this incident, and she consulted an expert who =
explained:

"Definitely not a bee, bees don=E2=80=99t hunt anything. It was likely one =
of two things; either a yellowjacket (who certainly would take almost any i=
nsect as prey to feed their larvae and then dismember it. Or it was one of =
the genera or robber flies who look very much like bees (like Laphria sp.)=
=E2=80=9D

Enjoying the nicer weather, at least briefly,
Renee
