Rob Van Epps and I covered parts of Richmond and Scotland County in the NC sandhills gameland yesterday, mostly looking for butterflies and dragonflies. It proved to be an excellent day. Highlight was seeing at least two YUCCA GIANT SKIPPERS. Fortunately, not quite yet mythical in the sandhills of NC.

Complete list (most double-digit numbers are rough estimates):

Spicebush Swallowtail - 16
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 7
Sleepy Orange - 3
Orange Sulphur - 1
Great Purple Hairstreak -1
Azure (Celestrina sp.) - 20 (current wisdom seems to indicate Holly Azure most likely)
Eastern Tailed-Blue - 25
Variegated Fritillary - 2
Red Admiral - 1
Common Buckeye - 2
Juvenal's Duskywing - 30
Sleepy Duskywing - 15
Unidentified "Dusky-things" - 45
Southern Cloudywing - 1
Unidentified Cloudywing - 2 (photos to be reviewed)
YUCCA GIANT-SKIPPER - 2, possibly 3 (one looked fresh, one a bit worn)

Odonata:

Harlequin Darner - 6
Ashy Clubtail - 3
Unid. Clubtail - 10 (mostly teneral)
Mantled Baskettail - 15-20
Common Basketttail - 1
Selys's Sundragon - 1
Blue Corporal - 30+ (many teneral)
Fragile Forktail - 10
