A chrysalis which had been 20 days into pupation, started eclosure about
9:30 this morning. It could not free itself from the chrysalis, as the feet
had little to grasp and it hadn't cracked the shell enough. After an hour,
I removed the chrysalis skin from it, and the emergent monarch climbed up
the side of the cage. Unfortunately, the wings must have dried out, as it
could not pump them out with the hemolymph, and it kept trying to push the
wings out with its rear feet. This chrysalis had fallen from the top of the
cage after a strong rainstorm about 7 days into pupation. I was able to
attach it to a branch I had in the cage. It looked normal, but I'd been
having questions about it after it got beyond 14 days. I will euthanize the
unfortunate butterfly.

I have a remaining chrysalis in the cage, about a week old and should eclose
in a about a week, depending on the temperature. That will be it for this
year's monarchs for me. Hopefully I will be able to tag that one. It would
be the only one this year.
