Howdy folks,

There have consistently been a few butterflies around our yard, but yesterd=
ay a few more species than usual, mostly while I was on an exercise walk wi=
th my trainer along mostly wooded Harkness Road (which kinda straddles the =
Amherst/Pelham town line).

White Admiral
Polygonia sp. (E. Comma or Question Mark)
Common Wood-Nymph - fluttering on the road, appeared to be mortally injured=
:-(=20
Great Spangled Fritillary
European Cabbage White - tons, as usual=20
Sulphur sp.=20
Tiger Swallowtail

Nice variety of moths lately too. iNaturalist tells me that last night=E2=
=80=99s most eye-catching visitors were a Variable Dart and a Grateful Midg=
et. Other recent nights brought in a few Ipsilon Darts, a Brown Angle Shade=
s, a Black Wedge-Spot, a couple of Pavlovski=E2=80=99s Monopis, and a puny =
Catocala that iNat thinks was a Little Lined Underwing.

About a week ago, spotted my first Monarch caterpillar of the year on one o=
f our next-door neighbors=E2=80=99 milkweeds; had seen adults a few times e=
arlier this year but not cats. Our Spicebush and the local Sassafras remain=
stubbornly devoid of caterpillars so far, as have our honeysuckles (one of=
which produced a clearwing moth hornworm last year; plenty of adult Hummin=
gbird and Snowberry clearwings visiting our Scarlet Bee-Balms, as usual, bu=
t their larvae are more elusive).

Did not notice any skippers yesterday, but Least Skipper has been generally=
more common this summer than I can remember from any previous year. On the=
other hand, very little luck with Lycaenidae here this year so far, only E=
TBs and one or two American Coppers.=20

Cheers,

Josh
