Folks,
Today was a lot different from any other day in Wake County that I have been butterflying. I was working the small flower plantings on the Bandwidth property; the "campus" buildings are north of Mission First Trail, but the plantings along with a few Frisbee golf holes are south of this road. I and others have butterflied this area about 4-5 times this year, with a large colony of Southern Skipperlings there. Just as I was finishing up, and having just seen a boldfaced butterfly there (see below), *a uniformed security guard came out, told me I was on the Bandwidth property, and that I was in violation of being there. [There are no fences or signs, but I do know this is part of the campus, but far away from the buildings.] But instead of letting me walk back to my car, he "escorted" [his word] me back to my car, where -- as I expected -- he took a photo of my license plate. * I felt violated by that. In return, I recall a long article that the Raleigh News & Observer ran on this high tech company, which has been in Raleigh only for a few years but houses about 800 of the 1100 staff across the continent. It was very enlightening and quite different from most other high tech companies, based on employees' comments, rather like Chick-Fil-A versus other fast food restaurants or Bob Jones University versus most other religious universities. Here is a quote from the paper, dated Aug. 6, 2024: "As Bandwidth has grown, adding more than 700 employees across two continents from 2018 to 2022, those who have worked there say evangelical tenets around faith and family continue to underpin its culture."
Moral of the story: *Stay away from Mission First Trail, and of course do not get out of your car there and walk around the grassy areas or the plantings. When at nearby Schenck Forest -- public property, STAY between the paved parallel parking spots along State Farm Road and the fence to the west! *I have no idea if the large grassy "parking lot" farther south of the mowed lawn of the campus is State property or not; I think it is, as cars are parked there for the State Fair and maybe some NC State football games. I plan on staying away completely; they have my license plate photo.
I had no trouble at the NC Museum of Art, (as usual, as this is public property,) which I went to afterward, covering the narrow plantings behind the parking lot and the zinnias at the north entrance. I DID check the few white clovers that were in bloom along the Schenck fence. The weather was sunny and mild, with temps about 756-76 degrees.
Totals are combined below, from about 1215-1330:
Pipevine Swallowtail 1 Sleepy Orange 2 Cloudless Sulphur 7 Monarch 6 nice total Variegated Fritillary 4 Common Buckeye 15 Pearl Crescent 12 lots in the narrow planting area Horace's Duskywing 1 female WILD INDIGO DUSKYWING 2 fresh; third brood; the small colony in summer has now produced a new brood at the museum *Byssus Skipper * 1 somewhat worn, on a small butterfly-bush at Bandwidth; maybe from the nearby detention pond? Fiery Skipper 30 Sachem 2 Southern Skipperling 15 about 3-4 on the clovers
