And, as always with savannas and Sandhills sites -- you *also* have to add
timing and amount of controlled burns to this mix. Not enough burning
yields rather few flowers; too recent burns (within a few months) and
things might not have recovered. And, lastly I know that in Fall 2020 I
witnessed a tragic burning of BOTH sides of Lodge Road owing to COVID --
which limited the staff available to conduct normal burning schedules and
instead simply just "burned everything" later in the season. I call these
burns as COVID Burns, and they do not allow for the needed refugia for
insects. (We assume most life stages of butterflies, other than adults,
perish in burns -- the reason to have UN-burned habitat on the opposite
sides of the roads, for example, for these eggs, larvae, and pupae to
survive.)

PS -- I suspect the rather heavy rainfall in late summer into September has
been an issue there. Note that on mainland Dare County and coastal areas
farther north to the VA border, skipper diversity and numbers are doing
well this past month.
