Folks,

Around midday, I decided to visit several gardens/plantings in west Raleigh
that I had not been to for a few weeks, owing to rain, clouds, and other
bland and non-sunny weather. So, around 1130 - 145, under hazy and most
cloudy skies (we haven't really had a true sunny day in Raleigh since
around Sept. 10), I hit the white clover patch in front of Schenck Forest
(third list below), then the planting row in back of the parking lot at the
Art Museum (second), and lastly Raulston Arboretum (first). The arboretum
still has plenty of plantings, with some stands of asters/mums yet to
bloom; the art museum has now dug up the spent zinnia flowers at the north
entrance.

Pipevine Swallowtail 9, -, - some fresh males of new brood; many older
females
Sleepy Orange 10, 5, -
Cloudless Sulphur 40, 4, - huge numbers at the arboretum on red flowers
Cabbage White 4, -, -
E. Tailed-Blue -, -, 1 no hairstreaks at Raulston
Variegated Fritillary 1, -, -
American Lady 2, -, -
Common Buckeye 10, 6, 1
Pearl Crescent 1, 8, -
Silver-spotted Skipper 3, -, - fresh; new brood
Common Checkered-Skipper 8, 2, 2
Fiery Skipper 75, 12, -
Sachem 1, -, - worn male
Eufala Skipper 3, 5, - Total of* 8 *is one of my best in Raleigh
Clouded Skipper 35, -, - very common now at Raulston
Southern Skipperling -, -, 10 one for every 8-10 clover heads, it
seems! The colony continues to survive, if not thrive
Ocola Skipper 22, 5, - good numbers finally
BRAZILIAN SKIPPER 1, -, - just a glimpse of one stopping briefly at a
white canna flower and buzzing off; first in about 3-4 years

No Painted Lady this time, and still no Gulf Fritillary or Long-tailed
Skipper for me all year in Wake County. Not a good year for southern
migrants around here, but all three are scattered across the state (based
on iNaturalist photos).
