After the recent CBS field trip, I found a lifer and farm first Gemmed Satyr in upland deciduous woods behind my house. This is the 44th species identified for the farm list. I did some research on the iNaturalist project and noticed a previously listed Least Skipper was later identified as a Southern Skipperling from 9/6/21. So, the skipperlings found on the field trip weren't farm firsts but the Least Skippers were. I also realized a Whirlabout I saw on 5/30/22 was a potential Laurens County first record as pointed out by Matthew Campbell. I overlooked his comment since I don't always follow up on additional id's or comments. I assume it still hasn't been reported because it doesn't show up on the range map in the recently published Butterflies of NC, SC, Virginia and Georgia.
We lost many mature Red oaks (especially Northern Red Oak) in the storm last week. It did however thin some Water Oaks that were overly dense so that should be beneficial. Thankfully, we and our animals are safe and we had minimal infrastructure damage. My heart goes out to those who were less fortunate and I hope that they can recover in time.
Good butterflying
Chris
